PROFILE: JOSEPH ALLEN FROM CITY BILLIARDS
Joseph Allen at City Billiards: Photography by Jackson Stahl

7/19/11
There's a new chef in town and he's with the latest chill spot in downtown Asheville, City Billiards. Joseph Allen is a man of innovative and creative cuisine. Although a native from Tallahassee Florida, the 22-year-old has lived in Asheville for 17 years. City Billiards opened its doors three weeks ago and just last week Joseph was invited to represent the restaurant in the Asheville Wing War competition promoted by Lush Life Today.
"I'm really excited about competing against people who have been in the restaurant business for years," Joseph said. "I know we will go against some good competition."
Participants invited to the Asheville Wing War competition were Luellas BBQ, North Side Bar and Grille, Fiores Pizza, Mother and Son Bistro, Mo'Daddy's, East Village Grille, Ed Boudreaux's Bayou Bar-B-Que, Universal Joint, Rocky's Hot Chicken Shack, Fred's Speakeasy, Burgermeister's, Franks Roman Pizza, Blue Point Brewery and Yacht Club. Joseph entered his Smokey Mountain wings into the competition which he says creates a good mixture of spicy and sweet flavor.
When eating Joseph's wings, they start with a candied yet savory kick in your mouth. For one moment you think his wings will leave you gasping for water, but all of a sudden the combined flavors balance out into a comfortable satisfaction.
"I think my wings will stand out just because of the fact that they're so different," Joseph said. "It's like a sweet and spicy flavor explosion in your mouth and people's first reaction to it is wow because it's edge is it's first initial reaction."
The Asheville Wing War competition began last Saturday started at 6PM. Musical acts at the competition lasted until 11PM at the Garage at Biltmore. Lush Life Today also brought free pizza and bread sticks from last years winners of the Pizza War competition. Free wings and beer came in addition to the $15-20 admission fee.
"I'm just happy to gain the experience of being in the Asheville Wing War competition," Joseph said. "Even if I don't win, I think this will bring City Billiards and myself exposure." "What if some awesome guy tried my wings one day and said he wanted to bottle my sauce?"
Joseph's a young guy and only time will determine his progression and expansion in culinary arts. Although City Billiards did not win this years Asheville Wing War competition, Joseph seemed content with the end result.
"It would've been nice to win the competition, but like I said in the beginning, I'm just glad to be given a chance," Joseph said. "I've been cooking for 8 years now and I want to be successful in the future."

THE JUNETEENTH CELEBRATION AT HILLCREST
Danny Stuberman and the mural at HillCrest Apartments: Photography by Jackson Stahl

Hillcrest is not just an apartment complex in Asheville North Carolina. It is a community of kids, teens, adults and elders. Everyone trying to keep their heads up in spite of many challenges but continuing to maintain a strong bond amongst each other.
As some Asheville residents know, Hillcrest has had its share of negative media attention in the past, but this weekend the community was able to join together in hosting something positive.
The first annual Juneteenth celebration at Hillcrest was created to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States. Historically, this date took place on June 19th in 1865. The originator of this holiday combined June and the 19th into Juneteenth to symbolize a day in which people from all backgrounds could celebrate. Hillcrest Apartments made a truly conscious decision to use this celebration to highlight their accomplishments and things they could do in the future to better their community.
One of the most significant parts of this celebration was the unveiling of the Hillcrest mural project. Working with the community, artists Ian Wilkinson, Ernie Mapp and Danny Suberman (a resident of Hillcrest) created a mural that spoke the stories of the residents of Hillcrest. Speaking with Danny at the event I learned that one woman in the painting was one of the oldest residents in the Hillcrest community.
Another person he spoke highly of was a late friend who died in the community that brought Hillcrest great sorrow. The mural was intended to unify Hillcrest not only to celebrate Juneteenth, but to celebrate themselves and everything they've overcome.
Christian rap artist Jay Solo was another great asset to this event. His lyrical inspiration through a combination of his love for rap music and God was truly encouraging.
Unfortunately, a sudden storm yielding high winds prevented me from seeing live performances from gospel soloist Robbie J. Williams, West African Dancers featuring Nadirah Rahman, Spoken Word artists and HipHop 4 Peace. I'm sure the other acts would've been great! Before the weather went crumby and I had to leave, I really enjoyed myself.
In light of the great energy at this year's Juneteenth celebration, I hope to see continued positivity coming out of Hillcrest Apartments in the future.
Most of all, I would also like to give great thanks and appreciation to the Women's Wellbeing and Development Foundation for putting together a great Juneteenth celebration.
A thanks should also go to the many volunteers that worked under the tents and provided all of the celebration supplies. I'm already excited about the Juneteenth Celebration next year.

THE JOSH PHILLIPS FOLK FESTIVAL
By Precious Barksdale
6/17/11
Musical Genre: Folk, Lyrical, Minimalist, Reggae, R & B, Soul, Roots
Take a moment to sit down and listen. Close your eyes and open you're hearts to the soothing melody of the Josh Phillips Folk Festival. Clear you're mind of present thoughts and think about any place you'd rather be than here.
When I listen to this folk band, I like to imagine myself in my own world. A place where time is infinite. No deadlines, no worries, no fear, just peace and happiness.
The music of the Josh Phillips Folk Festival invites me in every time. It gives me the freedom to listen my own thoughts and pretend I am just where I want to be.
My favorite thought is lying in a field of yellow tulips while starring into a clear blue sky. I am there and no one can bother me. I can lay aimlessly.
Life is full of challenging situations, but every now and then people need an escape. Wouldn't it be nice to just free you're mind for a moment? If so, do it by listening to music. If you need a good band recommendation, start with the Josh Phillips Folk Festival.
Then close you're eyes, sit down or dance to meditate. Their music will leave you feeling fully refreshed and ready to face reality. It will also leave you with a positive attitude and the ability to release the pressure.
This Friday, I had this chance and I took full advantage. I danced melodically with my eyes closed and my mind open. The Josh Phillips Folk Festival concert at the Orange Peel was a nice treat and I will continue to follow their music.
Shout out to the talented musicians of this band in which I had the pleasure of meeting this weekend. Josh Phillips on the guitar and vocals, Debrissa McKinney on the vocals, Elijah Cramer on the bass, Casey Cramer on the guitar, Nik Hope on the drums and Ryan Burns on the organ and keyboard.

THE ARCHRIVALS AT MODADDY'S
By Precious Barksdale
6/17/11
Interesting enough, this weekend I had the privilege of listening to two great bands in one night. After I left the Orange Peel, I walked over to Modaddy's to hear The Archrivals.
Let's just say, the Josh Phillips Folk Festival and The Archrivals have two separate musical types. The Archrivals fuse together jazz and rock music. Hence the title of their band.
People tend to think rock and jazz don't mix, but this band begs to differ. This being said, this band is successful at combining the two genres.
The reason The Archrivals makes these genres fit is that they find similarities in the two. First the ability to keep a constant beat. Rock and Jazz can be intense, but The Archrivals use soft rock and edgy jazz to make a match. It works!
This band unlike many shows character and style in their demeanor. They seem like a group of leaders, not followers that move to their own beat.
So you're probably wondering if their band name came from the 1989 basketball video game also called Arch Rivals. I thought the same too, but I don't really know.
The only thing I do know is that their bio says their the 2 guys at the end of the movie "White Men Can't Jump" that Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson beat in the final basketball challenge. Ha, ha a bold statement, but very practical.
This also justifies the goofy photos on their Facebook fan page of the manager/ vocalist/ keyboard player and booking agent, Chuck Lichtenberger. Although these pictures were silly, they were very hilarious.
Why mention only one member, let me introduce the entire band. Tim Haney on the drums, JP on the guitar, Zack Page plays bass, Stephanie does vocals, Justin on the trumpet and Jacob on the saxophone.
All very talented and dress in fashion savvy attire. Chuck wears his funky bug-eyed sunglasses and an all white 70s suit. TIm is dressed to impress while Justin and Jacob rock the 1950s faux hawk look. Stephanie wears her boyfriends long t-shirt with pink flesh tights and JP is dressed like Carlos Santana on the guitar.
Every member brings something special to the table. This band I would deem the most inventive and collaborative of the year and influenced by Miles Davis and Van Halen.

THE BLUES, BREWS CRUISE AT PISGAH BREWERY

6/11/11
We're all used to the old-time music our parents used to talk about. It's the slow, sappy sound of the world's sorrows that many people like to call blues. The songs are majorly about how a man loss his dog, wife, home or job and is now sad and lonely. I expected the same sad tone from the Blues, Brews Cruise this weekend, but it didn't happen.
The groups at this event were very into an upbeat type of blues that kept your feet tapping to the music and your soul in tune with their instruments. The old gospel choir I used to sing with as a child in my Baptist church has revived and still lives on in the voice of many blues bands in Western North Carolina. Again, there should have been more people at this event than they're were. Possibly because the tickets were $25 a piece, not as many people were interested in spending the money or maybe people just didn't know about the Blues, Brews Cruise.
Although I must say the show was definitely worth our while. We spent countless hours outside in the cool wet breeze listening to exciting bands. The neon blue and purple lights on stage set the melodic tone very well. Some people jumped out of their lawn chairs to dance. Although the crowd was a lot older than myself, I could appreciate their liking for the music.
One band in particular really struck out to me due to their strong vocals and powerful command on slide guitars, the dobro and lap-steel. Damon Fowler. From his outer appearance, you wouldn't expect such a unique voice. Damon and his companions also played their instruments so well. Like it was they're duty. He was also accompanied by an organ player and a guy on the drums. Other acts that played for this event was Sugar Blue, the Shane Pruitt Band, Peggy Ratusz and The Daddy Long Legs. All also very talented.
As the night flew by, fewer people were speckled across the audience. The bands eventually packed up and the night was over. I guess there's a first time for everything right! The first annual Blues, Brews Cruise at the Pisgah Brewery was a success, but possibly more advertising and promotion would make this an even better event next year.

JONATHAN SANTOS AT THE ARTERY
Jonathan Santos: Photography by Jackson Stahl

A man with a positive message and a voice of peace, Jonathan Santos. Someone who utilizes his voice and knowledge of life's lessons to express himself to the world. He genuinely cares about people from all over the world. Everyone to Santos deserves a life full of happiness and joy. More people in the world should follow their goals in life and keep their heads high to the sky. His theme song is called Changing the world by Changing me. What an inspirational message. In order to change the world we have to change ourselves. I think this message speaks to a lot of individuals in this world.
People should be less selfish and forget thinking only about themselves. Santos believes the world would be a better place if people would not only dare to care, but live to dream. To go on an adventure instead of the daily normality. To try something you've always dreamt of, but never pursued. His soulful and welcoming tone draws people into his music. Santos gently strums and picks his guitar to his own tune. People can't help, but to stare when he opens his mouth.
Believe it or not, many people need to hear something positive in their lives every now and then. It is a struggle to live in a world full of problems, complicity and consequences. Why not take a moment to think about your valuable life or other's lives. To think about the fact that many people don't live to see the next day. What about people who loss a loved one to senseless violence, sickness or turmoil. If we stopped caring so much about the daily superficial things we would be more conscious of what really makes us happy, life. There's no need to encourage negativity.
Santos voice will live on. Just as the voices of many legendary singers: Sam Cook, Elton John, Bob Marley and many many others. If you soon hear of a venue with Jonathan Santos, take the trip. He will expand you're mind and allow you to think freely. Santos true feelings of our lives is fully exposed through his deep lyrics and acoustic melody. Join Santos in the future as his tranquility travels through the city of Asheville.

THE FERAL CHIHUAHUAS AT THE BEBE THEATER
Left to Right: Karen Into, Adam Meier, Drew McDermott and Wyman Tannehill
By Precious Barksdale
6/10/11
"Did anyone order an extra large sausage pizza?" The porn star said while getting his chest hair picked by his assistant. How hilarious! The Feral Chihuahuas are on point. Jackson and I stepped into the BeBe Theater last Friday ambiguous and with no intentions. We left the theater that night with our cheeks hurting from laughing so much.
The first skit we saw was the group dressed as green mantas with strainers for eyes. Ha Ha! They were also girls at the prom who wanted to go all the way with male mantas by killing them. How did they come up with such creative story-lines for their skit? Its seems as if it would require a great imagination and a free mind. The first video was the highlight of the night besides the free beer break. A woman is walking with her grocery cart in broad day light to her car across the parking lot. All of a sudden, a band of pirates follow her and steal all of her groceries. A simple idea, but very clever comedy. Everyone in the audience got a kick out of this video. Jackson, myself and many other people in the audience laughed hysterically at the Feral Chihuahuas interpretive dance. The topic was on social media and the battle for attention.
A senior citizen played AOL instant messenger. I guess this is for all the older people these days who try to be hip. Friendster was a girl desperately in desire of having friends. She shook the hand of everyone in the front row of the audience. A job-seeker played Linked-In because of course this is the only reason people use this website, to find employers. And last, guess who were the last two standing? Facebook and Twitter. AOL died first, then Friendster, Linked-In and Myspace by Facebook and Twitter. Why am I not surprised? The final battle was the best. Facebook and Twitter had a standoff and both were killed at the same time like in an old Western film.
Speaking of old westerns, the last part of the show ended with a skit about Westerners with names related to the computer. One battle was between Go Daddy and HTML. The old western was also accompanied by a cast goofy theater singers with custom made costumes. Jackson and I had a wonderful time watching the Feral Chihuahuas for the first time. We even had a chance to meet them in person after the show. They were just as funny in person, as they were on stage. The Feral Chihuahuas constantly cracked jokes on each other on our video interview and had very interesting things to say about the talent and experience of the group. To see a live visual of the after-show interview with the Feral Chihuahuas check out LushLifeToday.com. I've heard a lot of creative band names in my time, but never before have I heard a name like Spicy Moustache and the Flavors Saviors. What a unique name for a band! Their name alone should have people curious to know how they sound. Mo Daddy's is known to bring many talented bands to their bar and venue, but this band tops their variety of creativity. Correct me if I'm wrong, but this is the largest local band I've seen in Asheville. This band has a wide selection of musical instruments as well: the trumpet, trombone, saxophone, bass, drums, guitar, keyboard and tambourine. No wonder the band was so loud. My only question is how did they fit so many members on such a tiny stage? Anyway, the show was definitely worth my while. A combo of all the genres I like: Funk, Soul, Rock and Hip Hop. My favorite part of the show was the funky attire of the bass player, Elie Herzog. He looked like Pimp Daddy Kane in his fluffy red hat and platinum suede jog suit. Lol. The crowd had to warm up to this band before they decided to step onto the dance floor. Spicy Moustache and the Flavor Saviors also play at the Boiler Room and many other venues downtown. They're Tuesday night regulars this month at Mo Daddy's. Stop by the bar one night and see them perform.

Lime Ricky, Lime Ricky
Edward and Lime Ricky at the Yacht Club

Lime Ricky, Lime Ricky! Where have you been all my life? You’re a scrumptious treat of lavish delight. The sweet and sour taste you bring, makes me laugh and want to sing. Chunks of lime, gin and strawberry puree, puts a twist in my knee. Nice and bright in the summer light, brings such joy to my night. Thank you Lime Ricky for a taste so great! Next time for you I will not wait!
Lime Ricky's can be very dangerous if you aren't careful. Yesterday, Paulie, Jackson and I took a Sunday stroll downtown to experience some of Asheville's best perks that people often ignore.
I'll start by reversing our day and describing the last great thing we did for the night. I can not get over how good the Lime Ricky cocktail was last night. The Lime Ricky tasted like Tropicana heaven with a pinch of Starburst flavor and spritz.
You probably think I exaggerate about how good my experiences are in downtown Asheville, but the truth of the matter is that I'm always in the right place at the right time. Say what you want, but if you don't believe the true potential of Lime Ricky, go to the Yacht Club and see for yourself.
Moving right along in reverse order, before we ended our day at the Yacht Club we were at Scully's. I had my doubts about this bar from its outer appearance, but I was definitely wrong. This is the only bar I know in Asheville where you can get a smoothie, cocktail or beer all at the same place. Jackson died to have a taste of my strawberry smoothie cocktail from Scully’s. This cocktail came in the clutch to suppress the humid summer heat. Sorry, I forgot what beers Jackson and Paulie ordered.
We also tried lunch there which was not bad at all. I ordered the flame-broiled classic cheese burger without red onions and with chipotle mayonnaise, tomato, lettuce and French fries. Paulie had the creamy potato soup, which I wanted to try because the melted cheese and bacon bits looked so delicious. Jackson went with special: burger and crab cake sliders. If I even thought I could steal a piece of Jackson and Paulie's entree, they probably would've bitten my head off.
The one thing I wanted to order that sounded like a brilliant creation was the fried shrimp burger. But of course, it wasn't available. This just gives me another reason to go back to Scully's to try their shrimp burger and other smoothie drinks. A fair review of the Yacht Club is still to come because they also offer a food menu. But for now, I couldn't help myself. I had to write a review about my new found love, Mr. Lime Ricky.

THE LOBSTER TRAP
Biltmore Estate White Zinfandel wine: Photography by Jackson Stahl

The Lobster Trap is a hidden treasure to many people in Asheville. Almost everyone of my friends that I spoke with prior to attending said they’ve never been there or do not know of its location. Besides this factor, there was a line at the door when the restaurant opened at five o’ clock last Sunday.
Upon entry I expected top dollar elegance, especially after viewing the expensive menu. Let’s just say the cost of quality seafood is never cheap. Jackson, Kelly and I were first greeted by two waiters and then led to a wooden booth near the bar. “Can we get you all something to drink,” one waiter asked. I decided to go with the Biltmore Estate White Zinfandel wine. This wine was a light pink color with a sweet and tart taste.
For appetizers we ordered crunchy crab cakes with a light breading and a creamy crab sauce. It also came with a sunburst smoked trout dip. I couldn’t decide which appetizer I enjoyed most. Both were very delectable and delightful.
It took a while to order our entrees because our waiters took their time. When they finally returned, Jackson asked, “how big is the lobstah roll?” “Hmm,” the waitress said, then sighed. “I don’t really know.” At this point, Jackson, Kelly and I glanced at each other in shock. I thought to myself, “how could our waiter not know the size of an entree on their menu?” After this moment of awkward silence, Jackson ordered the Shrimp and Mushroom Ravioli instead. I ordered the Shrimp and Grits.
So far, it seemed the chefs at the Lobster Trab were faster at preparing the entrees than their waiters were at serving them. In any case, my entree was great. The tomato basil taste created an interesting twist on the original grit recipe I know. As for the shrimp: tender and plump. Jackson’s entree was flavorful, but a little too much rosemary for my taste buds.
We left the Lobster Trap with a smile and our bellies full. The only suggestion I’d make for our next trip to this restaurant is that their employers demand full knowledge of the menu from their employees. The experience is better this way.

ZACH DEPUTY AT EMERALD LOUNGE
Zach Deputy: Photography by Jackson Stahl

Zach Deputy. A fun, cuddly and comfortable dude all wrapped up in unique flavors of funk, soul, reggae and acoustic sound. His voice is smooth, sensual and special. Alone he sits in his chair on stage with four microphones, an electric guitar and sound boards. "Ooh, ahh, good god," he shouts. Then breaks out into electric guitar solos and beat boxes to his own tunes. In a fuzzy toboggan hat, green tye dye shirt and tan loafers, Zach looks like a true homegrown musician. This guy's got talent! There should have been a higher attendance at the surprise show, and to everyone out there who missed it, your loss and you better get out to The Emerald Lounge next time. There's nothing left to say. Except this...
The Zach Attack
Coming to you live
The brown curly kid
With the cute fuzzy smile
Tapping his toes
To his own funk beat
He sings with soul
In da hot summer heat

DJ SKILLS AT EMERALD LOUNGE
Photography by Jackson Stahl

DJ Skillz wasn't lying when he said he's The Next Great American DJ. Last night he left behind a huge chunk of raw talent on the stage for everyone to experience. Many would call his demeanor, talented scratches and hot beats sick-nasty or better yet, straight-ill. DJ Skillz is a one man show who can scratch his turntables with insane speed and sensational repetition. The intro to his performance started with him showing the crowd just what he could do. Skillz moved his hands vigorously on each record as he scratched behind his back, without looking and with his elbows. This is something not many DJ's or MC's can do during a performance. Skillz also licked his fingers as he guided his own beats by mixing old school hip hop, disco, funk, soul, jazz and modern rap. He felt every spontaneous beat in his body movement as he wowed the crowd. Many people left his performance amazed by his creativity. The next time you decide to throw a hot hip hop party, book DJ Skillz. A special thanks to Tim Smith, creator of Asheville Social Life and the man who brought DJ Skillz to the Emerald Lounge last night. Follow SocialLifeAVL on Twitter to find out where the next greatest party will be! And of course you better check out Lush Life Today for the best pictures and reviews in town.

COMEDY NIGHT AT ATHENA'S
By Precious Barksdale
5/25/11
Athena's bar and nightclub is always packed with people on Wednesday nights. A comedy show filled the bar this week. There were so many people in Athena's that the Fire Marshall came because there were too many people in the bar. The comedy had to be good right? Well...don't get me wrong, some comics were not as experienced as others, but overall, it was a great show. The show was entertaining and very humorous with original bits from talented comics. Here are some quotes I found uncontrollably funny over the course of the show.
Katie Hughes
"Our teacher made us start a dream journal!" "What's so bad about that?" "A dream journal of her dreams!"
"When I was in grade school I was a geek!" "Mostly because my mother prepaid for my free and reduced lunch four years ahead of time."
Shucky Blue
"It was the rapture last weekend so I decided to get a hair cut."
"My wife and I had a Catholic wedding, but my wife never went to the wedding rehearsals because she said she wasn't a practicing Catholic."
Tom Evans
"My father always told me to get a switch for him to beat me." "One day I thought it would be funny to bring him a tissue. He wrapped the tissue around his hand and beat me."
"The baby changing station in the ladies bathroom should be the baby exchanging station."
"I should name my kid anonymous so that he can take the credit for all of those anonymous quotes."
Rebecca Steinhoff
"I hate myself so much that I am president of a hate group against me, Rebecca Steinhoff"
"Whenever I see a highway sign that says inmates working I never see inmates working on the interstate."

KON-TIKI AT THE WEDGE
Hank and Lora: Photography by Jackson Stahl
By Precious Barksdale
5/25/11
The beautiful full moon rests within a bed of plush white clouds over the sparkled midnight sky. A white stream of moonlight beams over the ocean as the calm breeze gently moves the waves back and forth.
In a Polynesian paradise, coconut trees lean over the sandy island with bamboo torches lit in every corner. Grass hula skirts and colorful lei necklaces cover the Hawaiian women with flowing hair. Each dancer moves in unison to the soothing sounds of Kon-tiki!
Although Kon-tiki is the Norwegian raft led by explorer, Thor Heyerdahl, it is also the name of Asheville's local Hawaiian swing band.
The ladies of Kon-tiki, Lora (Lo-Lo) Pendleton and Lin (Ling-Ling) Llewellyn both wear delicate pink and white flowers in their golden blond hair. Lora plays the bass rhythm as her hips sway side to side to their tune. Lin plays a red electric ukulele as smooth as butter and with ease.
The men of Kon-tiki, Hank Bones and Russ Wilson give the band a unique Oceana feel. Hank often wears Hawaiian shirts and a Panama hat while playing his steel and acoustic guitars. Russ’s signature look is also the Panama hat with his vintage cat eye sunglasses, also worn by Lin and Lora. Russ plays the cymbals and bongos.
The best aspect of this tropical getaway with Hula dancers, lovely couples and the beautiful scenery is the melodic voices of the Kon-tiki band. The sound of alto, soprano and baritone vocals surround the island atmosphere. Each member sings together in bamboo microphones similar to a doo wop band of the 50s.
This eventful night ends at the Tiki bar where Hank, Lin, Russ and Lora sit with their backs to the ocean and facing me at the bar. "Aloha," I say to them. "Aloha," they all respond. I deliver the band a round of Mai Tai drinks in coconut shells with a cherry, slice of pineapple and paper umbrella.
This beautiful fantastical night of Hawaiian swing music reminds me of a moment in time I never experienced, the 50s and 60s. Kon-tiki takes me back to a magical moment in time.

DOWNTOWN AFTER FIVE
Asheville Horns: Photo by Jackson Stahl
By Precious Barksdale
5/20/11
On Friday, Downtown After Five took a deep dive into a fun family atmosphere. Familiar faces, ice cream cones and beer filled the humid air as young children danced with balloon swords to the cheerful music. Live sounds came from the funky jazz band, Asheville Horns and the Cajun style band, Bayou Diesel. The musicians swayed side to side with their horns, accordions and guitars. Drummers from both bands expressed their own creative drum combination while the crowd yelled for more. Mothers danced with their children and couples with each other on Lexington and Broadway street until the night ended at 9PM.
Parents also bought balloon dogs and princess hats for their kids from the talented pink and green Balloon Fairy, Marcie McGrath. Not to mention the creative face painting by the fantastic and Funtastic Face Painter, Lesley Barkett.
For the most part, adults enjoyed the delicious beer variety from Pisgah, Highland, Green Man and many other local breweries. The food ranged from Brixx Woodfire pizza, Rosetta's Kitchen to the Jerusalem Garden Cafe. An endless variety I must say. Overall, the night was a great event for family, friends and loved ones.

A SATURDAY AT SUNNY POINT CAFE
Sunny Point Cafe: Plain Jane French Toast
By Precious Barksdale
5/21/11
One of the best breakfast's I've ever tasted resembles my afternoon at Sunny Point Cafe last Saturday. The food fit the description of KFC's slogan, finger-licking good! KFC is definitely not up to par with this cafe's standards and believe me, there is no comparison. Hands down, Sunny Point Cafe had some of the best food I've had in a long time.
One thing I will always remember about this cafe is their wonderful customer service by my waitress, Ivy Yenawine. Ivy was very helpful, patient and tentative to my table. I have to admit the cafe seemed very busy, but surprisingly it was a short wait. Once I sat down, I felt completely welcomed.
Although I wanted everything on the breakfast menu because it looked so delicious, I decided to go with the Plain Jane French Toast that came with fresh fruit and maple syrup. The toast didn't originally come with a side, but I couldn't pass up the maple black pepper bacon on the menu because its mere description sounded too tasty. When my french toast finally arrived it was on a warm white platter. Four thick french toast halves cut diagonally, slightly toasted, buttered and sprinkled in powdered sugar. Ummm!!! My mouth waters just thinking about it.
The french toast was far from a Plain Jane due to its beautiful characteristics. I definitely want to re-live the moment when I put that soft sweet french toast bite into my mouth for the first time. Wow! What a taste! My now favorite french toast was garnished in fresh-cut fruit. Oh the variety! Sweet pineapple, bananas, watermelon, grapefruit, black berries and strawberries. For a moment I felt as if I were at a tropical resort cafe.
Alright folks! Get ready to experience the description of the best free-range bacon I've ever tasted. Sunny Point must have marinated their bacon in black pepper and maple syrup for hours because I've never seen bacon so sticky. Sticky goodness is what I would call this bacon on the menu. Although I'd like to have more than four slices of bacon, better yet an entire chunk, I was definitely satisfied.
Check out Sunny Point Cafe for a taste you won't forget.
Caravan of Thieves at Grey Eagle
Benjamin Dean: Photograhy by Jackson Stahl

5/18/11
Imagine yourself on a rapid wooden bandwagon brushing through the winter branches and bushes into a forest. It's 18th century America and the evening sky is foggy, blue and pale white. Behind you on the wagon is a gypsy jazz and acoustic band. You're followed by an angry mob of ringmasters, jugglers, unicyclists and clowns running after you with fire torches. You sit in front of the wagon and somehow manage to lead the two horses in front of you. The band continues to play vigorously on the wagon with their stolen instruments as if nothing is happening. Perhaps they stole the instruments from the circus band? You don't know and don't ask.
As you look back, the angry circus mob gets closer. The music from the band intensifies, especially the violin player, Benjamin leans forward deeper into his violin so much that he almost falls off the wagon. The sound of the horses quick hoofs on the frozen ground match the sound of the mahogany upright bass played by Brian. Suddenly, two voices sing together in a soft melodramatic manner. Carrie and Fuzz also strum their blue and rosewood acoustic guitars while sitting on the floor of the wagon and strumming their fingers faster than ever before. Their music slows in tempo as the circus mob falls further behind. The wagon slows down with the music and stops. The musicians get off of the wagon and continue to play softly. A hungry pack of wolves emerge from the fog and surround the wagon. Everyone outside of the wagon jumps back in and you lead the horses quickly into the opposite direction.
Now the wolves run behind you and the band begins to play hastily. This time they ditch their instruments and grab metal pots, pans and wooden spoons and drum with each other. In the meantime you see a huge cliff in front of you. The horses decide to make a huge jump into the air as Carrie and Fuzz voices escalate higher and higher in pitch. The horses reach the other side of the dirt cliff and continuously move. You finally lose the wolf pack and slow down again. Once the night grows darker, you stop the wagon and build a fire under a tall oak tree. Ben, Brian, Carrie and Fuzz soon reunite with their instruments and slowly play you and themselves to sleep. You suddenly wake up and realize you're at the Grey Eagle music venue. You look up and watch the same band you led to safety in the winter forest on stage. The Caravan of Thieves, is what they call themselves. The musicians play just as vigorously as you remember. They make snake sounds to the crowd, sing, clap and ask the audience to participate. The night was one you never dreamt before. You close your eyes and savor the moment. Remembering that we're all a bunch of freaks.

An Amazing Night at Mo Daddy's
Paulie: Photos by Jackson Stahl
By Precious Barksdale
5/16/11
Spicy chicken-strips, waffles and Paulie created an interesting and fun combination tonight at Mo Daddy's. Tonight was a night filled with cold beer, funky music and an amazing environment. Paulie who told me to call him "Dr. Know" is a regular at this joint and told me everything there is to know about the bar. He carried around realistic plastic blue eye balls and held one up on his beer. Paulie then said, "would you keep an eye on my beer?" Paulie kept me smiling and laughing the entire night with his jokes, pictures of his pink pet monkeys and his superman wallet made out of recycled plastic. One joke of his sounded a little something like this (although some of you may have heard it before)."Why did the Sour Patch decide to go to college?" The answer was because he wanted to become a Smartie. The joke may sound corny to you, but I found it pretty clever. "Laugh out Loud!" In the meantime, the dim lights stirred a melodic and soulful mood within the bar. Women danced with each other and some men in front of the neon blue, green and red stage. The reflection of the neon lights lit up the crowd's faces like a Christmas tree.
Oh, and how could I forget to mention the awesome service by our very polite waitress and bartender, Kevin and Laylah. Kevin assisted everyone at the bar with beer and cocktails and walked back and forth through the kitchen the entire night. Laylah also served Jackson and I a delicious plate of waffles furnished with spicy chicken strips. The waffles also came with a side of honey syrup and a tall glass of beer. Umm, umm, umm! Chicken and waffles are the new and perfect late night meal. Order it without hesitation and the pleasure will be all yours!

Chicken and waffles are the new and perfect late night meal. Order it without hesitation and the pleasure will be all yours!

DJ Kool was on FIRE tonight at Emerald Lounge! He played hip hop hits from the 80s, 90s and 2000s. The crowd stood on their feet the entire performance. From rump-shakers, hip-swingers and head bobbers everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. Although at the beginning of the performance a fire alarm randomly went off, DJ Kool kept the party going as always. The sensational DJ played everything from reggae, old-school, go-go, west coast, east coast and even today's hottest hip hop songs. Kool definitely kept the crowd loud with his famous hit "let me clear my throat." The movement in the crowd were hands and drinks in the air. His raspy voice made the crowd all the more hype as he got them pumped and ready to dance hit after hit. One woman enjoyed DJ Kool's music so much that she jumped on stage when he asked the crowd if anyone had a birthday. Hilariously, he stopped mixing the music and said "this is my show and I won't play anymore music until you get off this stage." The crowd immediately exploded into an uproar until the woman stepped off the stage. After this, DJ Kool continued to play artists including LL Cool J, DMX, Arrested Development, Rare Essence, Usher and every other hip hop artist you can imagine. Fog and neon lights flooded the audience while DJ Kool held the microphone and spun his turn-tables until 2 A.M. Not to mention I danced all night until my body was drenched in sweat along with many other women. This party at the Emerald Lounge tonight was definitely memorable. If you missed out, you should be ashamed of yourself because it was an amazing and unforgettable performance.

a night at jack of the wood
Sons of Ralph: Photography by Jackson Stahl

Jack of the Wood is a place no Asheville civilian can miss. This bar has everything an outgoing person could ask for: great music, delicious beer and phenomenal food. Our waitress, Amy Wester was very polite and attentive to our table. She served the most delectable and mouth-watering berry cobbler I've ever tasted. My uncle, who also ordered this treat wondered if his mother hid in their kitchen because he never thought he could taste bar food this good. I sipped on my caramel glass of Green Man ESB and watched the talented musicians jam in front of an audience of dancing cowboy hats. The crowd loved the Sons of Ralph, a Western North Carolina bluegrass band filled with fiddles, vocals, guitars, mandolins, drums and many other impressive instruments. The dimmed lights brought a home town feeling to the people inside of the bar as I heard dancing feet tapping on the hard-wood floor. This place is definitely a spot for true Americana culture.

the Bywater's Beer masters tournament
Beer Masters Tournament: Photography by Jackson Stahl

5/3/11
Asheville's Beer Master's Tournament at The Bywater Bar was amazing. Never before have I seen so many people who knew so much about beer. The tournament started at 7p.m. and the place was packed with men, women and children. Sounds of glasses, laughter and conversation filled the room as judges and contestants prepared themselves for the challenge. In round one the contestants grabbed their yellow note cards and pencils to answer ten questions of beer trivia. One question in particular asked where the oldest brewery in America was located. Just sitting there and listening to the questions made me realize how little I knew about the beverage I enjoy so much.
Jeff Hicks, a long-time beer lover attended his seventh round of participation in Asheville's beer master's tournament and boy was he excited. As I took a sip of my delicious Berry-picker cocktail from the bar I looked over and saw the dark-haired man with round glasses punch vigorously into the air as he answered yet another beer trivia question correctly. "My brother and I are really passionate about beer," Jeff said. "We did a lot better in this tournament than we expected."
Jeff's brother is Scott Hicks, a person very knowledgeable about beer tasting. "This round was a little less fair because they used small glasses instead of actual beer tasting glasses," Scott said. He then told me the process of beer tasting was a lot similar to wine tasting because people usually use wooden stems to circulate the glass to bring out it's natural smell and flavors. I watched as the contestants of round two swished the variety of three dark beers in their mouths, starred blankly into space and wrote down the type of beer they tasted.
In the corner of the table of contestants was Billy Klingel, the brewer for the local restaurant called the Oyster House. Klingel watched closely to see if the contestants could figure out which beer he brewed. With his right hand massaging his chin, he seemed surprised to see one contestant write down the wrong answer. "I'm really excited about this week because we love brewing beer and we want people to keep buying our product," Scott said. He then told me the gap in my teeth was in-style because it was similar to the David Letterman gap. Fun times.
After the tournament ended, I spoke to Mary Liser, the creator of Asheville's Beer Masters tournament. "We wanted to create something fun and trivia based so that people could learn more about beer knowledge," Mary said. Mary and her colleague, Julie Jones had a lot to say about the tournament and its success. "This tournament is a great thing to promote beer," Julie said. "I am a judge of the Beer Judge Certification Program for a beer tournament in Denver and I love finding out about other beer tournaments."
Overall, this portion of the tournament was a blast, but the tournament is not over yet. The Lush Life Today crew is heading over to The Universal Joint this Tuesday to witness more trivia rounds and beer-lovers before the semi-final round.
